Tblog S*cks
04.03.06 (8:04 am)   [edit]
I've noticed that I haven't posted any new entries since September of 05, over 6 months ago. Everytime I've tried to post something new, Tblog was down or they redid their interface (for the worse) or they were down. Have not as yet moved to another site.

Berlin week 2/Europe week 4

Greetings from Schoeneberg, West Berlin,

Hola! We have been in Berlin since 1 September. It's taken us the two weeks we've been here to figure out the neighborhood, how to get around the city, and basic language skills (ein milchkaffee, ohne caffiene = decaf latte), since Berlin is sooooo big and spread apart. We just yesterday walked down a different street in our hood and found "the good playground" with lots of kids and the good falafel joint - Big Harb's.

We got to see our friends from Williamsburg, Sandra and Fiona twice before they flew back to NYC where they are moving from Williamsburg to Harlem. Sandra grew up here and took us to a great outdoor baby pool (Kinderbad) in a beautiful park (Monbijou) in the middle of Berlin and the next day to a beach on a lake (Strandbad Grunau) with canoes and ducks only 1.5 hours by train from our place.

We found an amazing indoor pool in our neighborhood Stadtbad Schoeneberg that has a baby pool warm as a bath, it's waist deep on noey at the deep end, a baby fountain, a kids pool, a long slide and another olympic pool with 3 jacuzzis and ala carte services like sauna, massage, tanning beds and cafe. The building is beautiful, high ceilings, walls of windows and modern changing rooms and showers. We want to live at the Stadtbad. Link above is a picture of the kids pool (not the baby pool), you can swim under the bridge and the pool continues outdoors.

We walked into a sign language class and Andreas, who runs it and Noey had a whole conversation using signs, then Noey was very talkative with his hands after that, it was great.

My mom just left us today, she was visiting for 4 days and had to get back to NYC for a Broadway show. We hope to see Roger and Lari again in November when they will be traveling in Portugal. We want to drive over from Barcelona for a weekend visit.

We found a little open market in Mexicoplatz on Saturday while Grandma Lari was here visiting. There was a guy selling handset type business cards that he then printed by hand. So we ordered a small batch, it was fun watching them being printed.

Observations:
The word for vegetarian in Deutch is Vegetariash, which sounds like, "Yeah, it's SORT of vegetarian . . ."
There literally a playground or Kindergarten (daycare) on almost every block.
Everyone rides a bike here, including bambinos. Hence the Like'A'Bike phenomena.
Only the littlest babies, who can't yet sit up are in Prams (not strollers) with big wheels and shock absorbers for walking on all the cobblestones here. Even sidewalks are cobbled, so a sleeping baby is a jiggety baby.
Skype was just bought by Ebay yesterday.
Bring lots of books with you when you travel abroad. The english book selection here is slim. And I can't read in German yet.
Bring some friends or family with you when you travel abroad, it's great quality time to spend together.

Travel with Noey Berlin & Dublin

Berlin week 1/Europe week 3

Prenzlaur Berg, East Berlin 09.05.05 Sunday

Shops are closed on Sunday in Berlin (not so in Dublin)

We ate at a great soup place called International Soup and sat next to another kid, his name was Oskar (pronounced Oskah!) and his dad reminded me of Mance's Dad of Kendall.  We are always missing friends and of course we've taken up Mance's mantra No-Wee No-Wee No-Wee -  whenever noey is sad for no apparant reason, we use this mantra and it turns his frown upside down.

We got a potty (another one) for noey in dublin bc he shows interest and sqauts when he wants to poo.  He doesn't like sitting in it, just likes to carry it around and sometimes stand in it.  I think he knows it's his tho and he likes having his own potty.

Our new routine is croissant while in his stroller in the am and i've been craving gelati in the afternoon which means Noey shares with me which means (like today) he freaked out on a sugar high when he was supposed to be taking afternoon nap.  Back to gelati, they have a great flavor call yogurt (Jogurt).

The hurricane is all consuming in the news. The first headline I read said "Katrina causes billions in damage" and I wondered who this euro starlette was that had only one name that had enough star power to cause so much damage, like a former spice girl gone crazy at the Ritz Carlton with her possee.

The npr like station we found in dublin was great because they'd play really nice folk irish tunes and all their news was in gaellic.

We found that there are 2 sports we've never heard of that are most popular in ireland:

1: Hurling: looks like lacrosse on first examination, but they are tossing a ball with a stick that is a cross between a hockey stick and and cricket stick. It's played like field hockey sort of, exept the ball is tossed and his with the stick.  kids as young as 5, 6 are practicing in parks.

2. Gaellic football: Like soccer (football) but you can kick, carrry, bounce, or hit (like volleyball) the ball to get it across the field. Both are baffling since we had never previously knew of their existance, and they are the biggest and most watched sports (over football which is soccer for us) in Ireland.

There is a big presidential election here in germany coming up and they had a duall last night (debate) between top 2 candidates. It's great to get BBC so we don't have to just hear propoganda from CNN.

Guttentach
09.04.05 (11:42 am)   [edit]

guttentach,

we are in berlin, a 5th fl. walk up.  when i found out, i just kept thinking about you, meg and the mom with twins who lives on the 4th fl. and thought, if they can do it, i should at least be able to for 1 month.

only the neighborhood where we are is far from stuff, so kind of a drag.  we hung out with sandra and fiona at a pool one day which was beautiful, made for little kids, only 1 ft deep and very nice with a park with trees and grass and a little snack bar.  the next day we went to a beach on a river where sandra's mom used to go with her family when she was young.  it was fun.  and in germany, all the kids go swimming nekid, so it's really cute with all little ones walking around with naked bums.

sandra, tony and fiona are leaving in a couple of days so we need to make new friends to hang out with.  it's a little difficult not knowing the language, but having noey is a good way to meet all kinds of people who he charms on subways and restaurants.

all the playgrounds are sandboxes and noey will have to relearn to get over his dislike of sand.  we just go every day hoping her'll get used to it.  the first grocery store we went to was hard core, we felt like we were in a third world country or at least a recently formerly 3rd world country.  i got a little sad and nervous, but then we found the Bio (organic) market and it was all right - phew.

one of the most useful phrases we use alot (bc we drink decaf, damn americanes!) is "Ohne kaffiene" which means "No caffiene".  they look blankly at you if you try to order a decaf.  speaking of corporate evil, we saw a cafe today called BALZAC COFFEE and laughed bc from a distance the typeface for the sign looked just like Starbucks.  But then we went in and everything looked EXACTLY like STarbucks, down to the wire baskets they sold their muffins in. and the grande, vente, tall, short language was used, even the chairs to sit on were identical.  we just figured that starbucks in germany is called balzac coffee but when we asked the 2 girls working there they replied that it was not related at all to starbucks and that they were in fact Better than Starbucks. . .

379 Days
07.08.05 (5:02 pm)   [edit]
It has been three hundred and seventy nine days since my life changed completely. I create personal transformation every now and again. But my life changed, utterly and forever when Noakai Yasui Aronesty was born.

He reluctantly detached from my soulbody and shuddered from my womb at 4:21am on June 24, 2004.

Today, he is walking. Enjoys playing the harmonica. Likes to shake his head vigorously 'no'. Points at everything. Calls everything 'guenk' or sometimes 'geunk'. Dances with both arms waiving around while walking in circles. Curls up into a little "C" when he breastfeeds, and turns into a large "X" when he falls asleep. Wants to do everything on his own. Loves playing with balls, rolling them and crawling or walking after them, over and over. Eats a fresh orange every evening. Loves yogurt at noon. Tries to grab at the water falling from the shower. Listens to birds outside the window. Grins ear to ear everytime he sees a dog, waits for the dog to kiss him on his face. Smiles coyly at pretty girls. Sits in the laps of people he likes. Crawls on our heads to wake us up in the morning. Grabs at his sling when he wants to go for a walk. Falls asleep holding a cracker in his stroller. Tries to brush his teeth with his own toothbrush. Has a job rearranging the tea boxes in our cabinet. Likes to ring the feng shui bell in our living room. Likes watching basketball at the playground. Loves sitting under homemade sheet-tents in the morning. Enjoys 'flying in the sky' and 'feet to feet' and 'Chochi Chochi' and 'this little piggy'. Does not like diaper changes, tries to escape when we are trying to put a clean diaper on. Plays with his alphabet magnets everyday. Presses the button in the elevator for our floor (4). Likes reading his books and being read to. Falls asleep to 'Dreamland" everynight since he was born. He most relaxed when both mom and dad are around. Is happiest when he has lots of family around, aunts, uncles, cousins, second cousins, grandparents, step-grandparents, great-grandparents. Makes lots of people on the street smile when they see him.

Noakai you are like waking up into the best dream and then living it.

Hip Mama in Hawaii
07.06.05 (5:06 pm)   [edit]
Ever since reading the "The Mother Trip: Hip Mama's Guide to Staying Sane in the Chaos of Motherhood" by Ariel Gore, I've enjoyed reading Ariel's blog once in a while.

I discovered from a recent post "The Pineapple Diet" which she wrote from Hawaii that they were in Honolulu, eating alot of pineapple in Waikiki.

This spiritual mama needs some Aloha I thought, so I emailed Ariel and my mom. They met the next day when Lari picked them up in Waikiki, then took them to Sunset Beach, they saw Sea Turtles and ate shave ice before having to fly back to Portland.

It's poetic that I met her writing because I was a new mama reading her mama wisdom; then she and her daughter chilled out with my mom. Community of mama love, circle, cycle.

(See "The Benefits of Blogging".)

XOXO

Noakai 9 Months
04.03.05 (8:25 pm)   [edit]
Noakai is just over a cold that he got twice (from the same baby) and a stomach virus (that he and Erik shared). So he was pretty much in baby exile as we say here in the hood. He can't go to playgroups lest he spread the germs! and you know there are kids who are there under the radar with their green boogies and oh-so-slight-coughing.

We can't wait to play with other babies again. Now I know why people have more than one, it makes it easier on the parents for your child to have a playmate, otherwise you're going all over town looking for other kids for your kid to play with. And they can't be too little (they just lie there) or too girly (same) or too 'gentle' (noakai 'plays' like he's practicing rugby), basically if you are a 2 -8 year old boy and you tolerate babies
(steal toys away, run over them, throw balls at), you're the perfect playmate for our son! He also seems to be particularly enamored of girls age 9, who he falls intantly in love with, climbs into their laps and starts making out with them.

The magic trick he does is stand up without holding onto anything (he's been pulling himself up to standing for 3 months) which usually happens when he's playing with a really interesting thing and forgets that he's not holding on.

He calls everything "This" and sometimes says "This, is this!" We once met a cute girl baby at the playground who shouted "That!" and I was like, these two are made for eachother. Her father confirmed that she says "That" for everything.

Still is boppin his head which is really cute. When he's happy he chirps like a bird. An American Goldfinch to be exact (he has an Audubon plush bird that recreates the authentic bird sounds of each bird toy).

And, he is most happy when he's naked or at least bare bottomed. So at least once a day, we let him roam free and he happily crawls around bare-butt on the wood floors (easy cleanup) chirping like the happiest american goldfinch you ever did hear.

Dumplings
04.03.05 (8:20 pm)   [edit]
Gyoza, Pierogies, Pot-stickers, Dim-Sum, Man-Doo, Momos, Samosas, Ah yes, dumplings: little bags of joy, tender and succulent, a juicy taste explosion massaging the taste buds and senses. Can one ever have enough? So versatile, so cute…dumplings have got the lot.

We had a wonderful little meal at Dumpling Man in the East Village. Of course all good dumplings are wonderful little meals, but what made it particularly wonderful for us was that they had a Veggie dumpling, (Seared 6 pieces $4.55, 10 pieces $6.95).

Most fun part is you can watch the official Dumpling Man ladies making dumplings, which reminded me of my favorite "restaurant" to go to as a kid, Shakey's Pizza Parlor where the kitchen was enclosed in glass like a pizza making diorama, and us kids could sit on the long wooden benches and watch them make pizza over and over and over, never tiring of the dough on the conveyor belt and the automatic dough roller, or flattener as we liked to call it.

Also on St. Marks Place, we've recently been to the Hummos Place and as the name would indicate, they have hummos. Israeli Hummos. Made fresh daily. It's delicious and a great healthy snack. They basically just have hummos but it's served with the best pita, warm and fresh, you can also order a salad.

This very specific type of dining seems to be very popular and is what I love most about living in NYC, we have a Grilled Cheese restaurant, a Peanut Butter and Jelly restaurant, a japanese Cream Puff place (always with long lines); a Naan bread place with a couple of competitors in spitting distance. You can have a successful business if you know your niche and market it well.

9 MONTHS: Inside & Outside
03.19.05 (4:06 pm)   [edit]

Noakai will be 9 months old this week.  Which means he's been breathing air in this "outside" world for as long as he swirled around the life liquid inside of me 9 months previous.

Today, he went down the slide by himself for the first time.

He was sick this week, and he reverted back to his little baby self to heal, breastfed alot, almost exclusively, did not eat food, slept alot, and bub-napped (snoozed while sucking on the boob).

I call him my 'little C', he curls into a comma next to me when he nurses, cups his fat little hands around my breast and looks up at me or closes his eyes.  It's the sweetest thing.

He said "twelve".  He held up his blue cup to our bath light (which is a blue light) and said "Boo".  He loves drinking herbal tea & fresh squeezed orange juice; loves eating almonds and yogurt.

He is always with me even when he's not.  When I carry him in the sling, and he's so big and heavy now (23 pounds), I imagine what it was like carrying him inside of me, and though he was littler then, I had gained more weight (60 pounds) that he weighs now.  But it's difficult going up the subway stairs, walking up Bedford Avenue from Metropolitan to South First.

He is ending his days, weeks and months as a fetus--crawling and standing, eating and drinking--he can do things separate from me.  But there is a thread connecting his heart to mine, like an silver umbilical cord, strong, nourishing and soulful, only now he feeds me as much as I feed him.

Leaving & Loving
01.18.05 (7:15 pm)   [edit]
Tuesday, January 18, a week before Noakai's 7 month birthday. Today, I went to work. Today, I left my baby. For 9 hours. I've never left him for more than 1 1/2 hours. We all had alot of growing up to do. And I survived. He survived. Erik survivied.

It was bittersweet to leave in the morning and a joy to return in the evening. Both Erik and I are saying to each other, now you know how I feel . . .

Noakai is such a champ, I know that more than us taking care of him, he takes care of us. We may have to feed him and clothe him, but he loves us and demands love, not just for himself, but for us to love eachother.

We always call him the love bridge, in his sleep he'll end up in between us with his arms outstretched, touching both Erik and I with one of his chubby little hands, hands that make magic.

Thank you Noey for your big heart, your forgivness for our mistakes as we learn how to be a family, to be parents. Thank you for allowing us to travel this amazing journey with you.

Today, I grew into motherhood a little bit more.

Marinading Babies
11.23.04 (8:39 pm)   [edit]
Grandparents are an important ingredient in marinading babies. I once saw a movie ages ago, before i ever thought i'd be a mom, and the one line I loved and always remembered was something like:

"Having kids is easy, just make sure you marinade them in love for about 18 years and boy, do they come out juicy!

The recipe calls for mom and dad to love each other every day so that baby is properly soaking up the marinade.

It always made me think, yeah, I could do that. It inspired me beyond all my inadequacies & neuroses in choosing to become a parent.

What Now???
11.19.04 (9:29 pm)   [edit]
November 2nd was a dark day in our country. On November 3rd, many intelligent, creative and inspiring Willyburgers were ready to move. To Canada. Well, maybe Vancouver if not Toronto.

MoveOn is asking just the same question, What do we do now?
Go to MoveOn.org and click on "Future of MoveOn House Parties" on Sunday November 21 to attend a party slash townhall meeting to brainstorm the future focus of MoveOnPAC.org and what you can do since we have four more years to get it right.

=http://www.voterpunch.org""See how your elected officials voted"
I met the guy who created Progressive Punch in DC last year at the Democracy Conference Erik and I attended in Washington DC in November 2003 (when I was hapai).

Did you know that as Americans we do not have the Constitutional Right to Vote? (Neither do we have the constitutional right to education or healthcare . . .)

If we do not have the Constitutional Right to Vote, then no matter how much we reform elections, use approval voting, promote voter registration, stop unfair redistricting, implement electoral college reform, switch to instant runoff voting, any work towards a more functional democracy can fail or be overturned because we do not have the basic constitutional right to vote.

You can listen to a webcast of Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr's Speech on the Constitutional Right to Vote. He is such a great speaker, very oratorial, and it was funny because he had this great booming, baritone and he talked just like a preacher from a southern baptist church and was very engaging and without a doubt the best speaker at the Conference, but then once or twice he'd say in a normal voice, "how much more time do I have?" very politely.

Keep the faith and activate by doing, participating, speaking out, living passionately.

Critics Question Peace Prize for Environmentalism
10.13.04 (11:11 pm)   [edit]
In Wartime, Critics Question Peace Prize for Environmentalism
New York Times, October 10,2004

"OSLO, Oct. 9 - The decision by the five-member Nobel Committee to award this year's Nobel Peace Prize to an environmental activist prompted some prominent Norwegians to criticize the selection, saying the effectiveness of the prize in promoting peace, enhancing security and ending conflicts could be diluted."

I congratulate Wangari Maathai for her ongoing work in women's rights, peace and the environment.

Despite the criticism against Maathai, primarily known for her work as an environmental activist as this years selection for the Peace Prize, I applaud the Nobel Committee for thier insight.

We need to bring light to the fact that it is women who do the work of peace all over the world every day. It is the main task of women to raise and educate the children, to cook and collect water, to create communities where they live.

And it is the environment which provides not only our basic needs of fresh air and water, but also the fuel to cook meals or drive our SUV's to McDonalds.

Let Peace be defined by how we live rather than how we fight or end our wars.

How Noakai Got His Name
09.29.04 (11:49 pm)   [edit]
We made up Noakai's name with other hawaiian names/words. We always like Kai, but it was not sounding quite right, we also liked Noa, but it wasn't quite right either.

We looked at the soul in front of us that was our son and thought he was both beautiful and strong, and wanted his name to embody these qualities.

In Hawaiian, Kai means ocean and I read that Noa means freedom. There is also a Hawaiian name "Kainoa", but we wanted something less common. We looked at all the Kai & Noa names and combos and finally came up with Noakai. It sounded both strong and beautiful to us. A unique name and baby was born! It is a made-up name, if you ask a hawaiian person what Noakai means, they won't know what you're talking about.

We did a search online, and there was no other Noakai except for an old japanese comic book hero! Now Noakai has his own website, www.noakai.com. Go there for a big dose of super cuteness.

Noakai Update September 18
09.18.04 (11:52 am)   [edit]
Noakai is amazing and beautiful. We just had his Namkaran (Naming Ceremony) on September 7th, 2004. A friend who is an interfaith minister (Camille Diamond) led the ceremony, another friend (Nil Bhattacharya) played the sitar, and we asked all the guests to bring a blessing which everyone shared in a circle around the baby.

Some of his blessings:
May your life be rich & deep like the ocean.
May you know the glow of kindnesses; and the lightness of laughter and joy through all your days.
We wish him a long life of good health, abundant joy, and much laughter.

He is going through a growth spurt and grew 2 inches in the last 3 days. At 12 weeks he is 26 inches and 16 pounds. Today (9/18/04) he learned how to squeal joyfully, sounding like a big boy. Also, he keeps getting cuter by the minute.

I had a dream on Sunday that I brought Noakai to meet my spiritual elders, Dadi Janki and Mohini Bhen. Dadi lives in London and travels all over the world, so I didn't know when next she'd be in NYC. On Monday I saw Dadi's picture in the Metro, advertising for a program she'd be speaking at the next day. So we went as a family and Noey got to meet Dadi and Mohini Bhen, and it was just like my dream.

I really feel like he brought me to that event and to that meeting. He is a very special soul.

DIAPERS DIAPERS EVERYWHERE!
08.19.04 (1:01 pm)   [edit]
Diapers - Cloth
We love cloth and have a diaper service. Diaper covers are the waterproof covers that protect you and everything in your house from poo. They also have velcro closures to keep the diaper in place. The other benefit of a diaper service besides the obvious, you don't spend your life washing diapers, is that when the baby grows (which is often and alot), the service provides you with the next size in both diapers and covers. This way you're not stuck with 30 newborn diapers that you'll never use again.

Seventh Generation
No chlorine - we love these. Make sure you get the N for Newborn size which they did not sell when we bought diapers before the little man was born. Small is way to huge for newborns. We like these and other people ask us about them (gives you a chance to educate others and influence them positively) since they are natural in color instead of bright white.
TIP: If you order from Drugstore.com, you can get free shipping if you buy $50.00. Also, don't buy too many of one size, not more than 3-4 packs, as you never know when your baby will start fitting the next bigger size. Newborns go through diapers very quickly, but they also grow rapidly.

Tushies
these are supposed to be the only hippie diapers without the evil gel. but they are constructed poorly, ie, only 1x elastic band around legs which mean escaping and possibly explosive if not drippy poops. and they don't have the patented velcro like tabs which 7th Gen do. 7th Gen also has double elastic bands around legs. So we are using up our one pack of Tushies and then not buying them again. (They also don't have newborn size that we could find)

Pampers Swadlers
If you must buy evil, we liked the features on this one. Super stretchy sides, soft, almost clothlike feel, nice vecro tabs and good double elastic all the way around. Make sure you get the littlest size for newborns, the pack they come in is actually smaller than other sizes and the Sesame St. characters are lying down and sleeping if you get the correct size. The bigger sizes have the characters awake and upright.

Luv's
We haven't tried this brand, but another friend recommended them because they are cheaper and newborns go through so many diapers you'd probably save some dinero.

As always, please write back with any comments and/or feedback on any topics mentioned here. Input is greatly appreciated and welcome!

Love and aloha.

AUGUST SHOUT TO MOMS: Love and Baby Wearing
08.18.04 (8:50 pm)   [edit]
Dear New Moms, Dads & Friends,

Just wanted to say hello to everyone and ask how Mommys, Daddys and Babies are doing.

Noakai is 8 weeks old and so amazing we can't stand it. Literally, can't stand it.

Please send your stories or any ideas, what's working for you and what isn't, what resources you're turning to etc.

Heres what we're up to:

READING
Hands On Baby Massage by Michelle Kluck-Ebbin
This was given to us as a gift. We like spending special time with baby for a daily 'excercise'. I use what I've learned in Mommy Baby Yoga combined with a couple of massages from this book. Noakai loves it.

BABY WEARING
We are a baby wearing family. We have the New Native Baby Carrier, the Maya Wrap, Sling-
Ezee and Baby Trekker.

www.newnativebaby.com
http://peppermint.com/" title="http://peppermint.com/" target="_blank"http://peppermint.com/
- A great support site for all kinds of slings
www.babytrekker.com
http://lactinv.com/sling.htm" title="http://lactinv.com/sling.htm" target="_blank"http://lactinv.com/sling.htm (Sling Ezee)

We used the New Native Baby Carrier when baby was newborn up to 3 weeks or so. He quickly got too heavy for this to be comfortable, although I haven't tried him in various positions since. This sling is the least complicated to use since it's already a pouch and all you do is put on and insert baby.

I then graduated to the Maya Wrap, which is super adjustable and great for multiple positions. But Noey was getting heavier still.

The Sling Ezee is just like the Maya Wrap, but with padding, so it's more comfortable for me since Noey is now nearing 14 pounds. I wear him vertical hold facing my chest or lying down if he's sleepy, but his favorite position for being awake is the kangaroo. This sling is very easy in and out for baby.

Baby Trekker is not a sling, but a baby wearing device. It distributes the baby's weight over both shoulders and the waist since it's more of a 'backpack' style. Baby can be worn facing in or facing our and when older, on the back. This is more complicated to wear, to put on and to remove, but, since it has great weight distribution, I can go for very long walks without baby getting too heavy for me.

Basically, there is a sling for every parent and baby. It helps if you can test drive them. Feel free to come over and try any of the one's we have. If you're in Williamsburg, Sam & Seb's will teach anyone how to use your sling, they are more than happy to help out. They also sell Sling Ezee and will start carrying the Maya Wrap.

Please write back send comments!

Lots of love,

Baby Carrier
A friend of mine sent us this baby carrier, I found it to be wonderful because it is so comfortable! Since Noakai got bigger and heavier, I can only carry him comfortably in the sling for about 20 -30 minutes before he starts getting too heavy, although he loves being in it.
(I hear that Sam & Sebs on Bedford has slings and will show you how to use them)

Here is their website, it's a Canadian company so you can order online or through their toll free number. If you do, let them know that Heidi Kon referred you, she's my friend from Honolulu who sent us our Baby Trekker.

Dads Are Great
06.20.04 (3:23 am)   [edit]
Awaiting the not so little one to make her debut appearance in this world, it's Erik's Almost First Father's Day today.

Now that we have the (car seat), we are ready for the birthing center. The bebe may have other ideas, I think she wants to be a Cancer instead of a Gemini.

Thanks to Roger and Joe for being wonderful Dads. Because of you, we have role models of dads being unconditionally loving, patient and lots-o-fun.

Those intimate with Williamsburg 11211 (Brooklyln, NOT Virginia) are all too familiar with the sounds of car alarms, blaring ice cream truck musak, really loud spanish music and the rumblings of misc. trucks/buses/motorcycles, often all at once.

There are not alot of dogs around here (no parks or dog runs). There are no squirrels (same reason). There are alot, alot of pigeons. They are so big, I sometimes mistake them for a small dog.

Also, there is a well known watering hole that resembles a holding pen for californians, this image is enhanced by the corrugated aluminum wire-topped fence, they are the post-college-we're-so-boh emian-we-are-in-Williamsb urg-drinking-beer-out-of- doors-kind-of-crowd. This establishment by the way, does not allow dogs. (I know of many indoor bars that allow dogs, WTF Mate?).

Williamsburg has a very enthusiastic ManWithAVan who posts flyers on every available surface throughout the whole neighborhood.

One of the true charms in the neighborhood are the Helados men who walk around the neighborhood with carts on wheels selling the Puerto Rican version of Italian Ices. Coco, Cherry or Pineapple, any flavor for a dollar.

You always have to chase them down the sidewalk, so you get fresh air and excercise before your treat. Helados carts are the antidote to the unrelenting KoolMan Softee Ice Cream trucks that drive by with their too loud really bad musak. Helados men sometimes alert you by way of a bike horn (honk, honk) that sounds like a strange goose, or you have to listen for the squeak of their cart wheels going by.

The Waiting Game
06.08.04 (5:49 am)   [edit]
When they give you a "due date" it's really a due month. The so-called "due date" is the 40th week (Yes, 40 weeks). But expected delivery can be anywhere from 38-42 weeks.

We are now entering week 39. Our main goal this weekend was to get a car seat. If you're an expecting parent in NYC, it's one of the true ironies that you have to have a car seat but you don't have a car.

The hospital requires you to have a car seat to bring baby home. Understandable, but what the heck would we do with it after that special One Time Use?

Sure, we may be inclined to take a taxi to the city for a SuperFunKidFriendlyEvent, (although we'd be more inclined to sling the baby onto Mom or Dad) but then we'd be stuck lugging a heavy car seat around the city on our outing.

The only solution we could think of was to get a Sit-N-Stroll. It's a 5 in one Stroller, Car Seat, Booster, Flight Seat. So you can put baby in a car, then convert the car seat instantly into a stroller, more so we won't have to carry the car seat than to stroll the baby.

I know this is all TMI for most of you, but it had to be said.

FREE IS GOOD
04.29.04 (11:24 am)   [edit]
E and I went to a FREE screening of "The World's Saddest Movie". It was conceptual and weird, not necessarily in a good way. If you want to see Isabella Rosellini without legs, this is your film.

So we left and went to Baskin Robbin's FREE Scoop Night. Free ice cream. yum.

SHAMPOO CONSPIRACY!!!

Shampoo = Hair loss = $$$$ for shampoo/Rogaine industry

As a household science experiment, Erik and I decided to not use shampoo. * We wash our scalp, I use conditioner and he uses Coconut Oil.

Immediately, there was considerably less hair in the drain, where before a mass of tangled hair would come off in my hands as I shampooed and conditioned, now, only 1 or 2 strands if any come out when I wash my hair.

Frits says that the shampoo manufacturers and the Rogaine folks are in cahoots and that's how they have managed to create a multi-billion dollar fake industry, that practically every man, woman and child in America buys into.

So take the "No Shampoo Home Science Experiment Challenge" Recommended minimum time frame should be 2 months.

Send your results or comments to this blog [please note how long you participated in the NSHSEC; what if anything you 'washed' your hair with; and any results.]

* Frits was the original sample; he had not used shampoo for years (15-20?) and has beautiful, full, shiny, healthy hair. Ronnie made the suggestion to him, then Frits tried it, he liked it and now swears by it.
