DIAPERS DIAPERS EVERYWHERE!
08.19.04 (1:01 pm)   [edit]
Diapers - Cloth
We love cloth and have a diaper service. Diaper covers are the waterproof covers that protect you and everything in your house from poo. They also have velcro closures to keep the diaper in place. The other benefit of a diaper service besides the obvious, you don't spend your life washing diapers, is that when the baby grows (which is often and alot), the service provides you with the next size in both diapers and covers. This way you're not stuck with 30 newborn diapers that you'll never use again.

Seventh Generation
No chlorine - we love these. Make sure you get the N for Newborn size which they did not sell when we bought diapers before the little man was born. Small is way to huge for newborns. We like these and other people ask us about them (gives you a chance to educate others and influence them positively) since they are natural in color instead of bright white.
TIP: If you order from Drugstore.com, you can get free shipping if you buy $50.00. Also, don't buy too many of one size, not more than 3-4 packs, as you never know when your baby will start fitting the next bigger size. Newborns go through diapers very quickly, but they also grow rapidly.

Tushies
these are supposed to be the only hippie diapers without the evil gel. but they are constructed poorly, ie, only 1x elastic band around legs which mean escaping and possibly explosive if not drippy poops. and they don't have the patented velcro like tabs which 7th Gen do. 7th Gen also has double elastic bands around legs. So we are using up our one pack of Tushies and then not buying them again. (They also don't have newborn size that we could find)

Pampers Swadlers
If you must buy evil, we liked the features on this one. Super stretchy sides, soft, almost clothlike feel, nice vecro tabs and good double elastic all the way around. Make sure you get the littlest size for newborns, the pack they come in is actually smaller than other sizes and the Sesame St. characters are lying down and sleeping if you get the correct size. The bigger sizes have the characters awake and upright.

Luv's
We haven't tried this brand, but another friend recommended them because they are cheaper and newborns go through so many diapers you'd probably save some dinero.

As always, please write back with any comments and/or feedback on any topics mentioned here. Input is greatly appreciated and welcome!

Love and aloha.

AUGUST SHOUT TO MOMS: Love and Baby Wearing
08.18.04 (8:50 pm)   [edit]
Dear New Moms, Dads & Friends,

Just wanted to say hello to everyone and ask how Mommys, Daddys and Babies are doing.

Noakai is 8 weeks old and so amazing we can't stand it. Literally, can't stand it.

Please send your stories or any ideas, what's working for you and what isn't, what resources you're turning to etc.

Heres what we're up to:

READING
Hands On Baby Massage by Michelle Kluck-Ebbin
This was given to us as a gift. We like spending special time with baby for a daily 'excercise'. I use what I've learned in Mommy Baby Yoga combined with a couple of massages from this book. Noakai loves it.

BABY WEARING
We are a baby wearing family. We have the New Native Baby Carrier, the Maya Wrap, Sling-
Ezee and Baby Trekker.

We used the New Native Baby Carrier when baby was newborn up to 3 weeks or so. He quickly got too heavy for this to be comfortable, although I haven't tried him in various positions since. This sling is the least complicated to use since it's already a pouch and all you do is put on and insert baby.

I then graduated to the Maya Wrap, which is super adjustable and great for multiple positions. But Noey was getting heavier still.

The Sling Ezee is just like the Maya Wrap, but with padding, so it's more comfortable for me since Noey is now nearing 14 pounds. I wear him vertical hold facing my chest or lying down if he's sleepy, but his favorite position for being awake is the kangaroo. This sling is very easy in and out for baby.

Baby Trekker is not a sling, but a baby wearing device. It distributes the baby's weight over both shoulders and the waist since it's more of a 'backpack' style. Baby can be worn facing in or facing our and when older, on the back. This is more complicated to wear, to put on and to remove, but, since it has great weight distribution, I can go for very long walks without baby getting too heavy for me.

Basically, there is a sling for every parent and baby. It helps if you can test drive them. Feel free to come over and try any of the one's we have. If you're in Williamsburg, Sam & Seb's will teach anyone how to use your sling, they are more than happy to help out. They also sell Sling Ezee and will start carrying the Maya Wrap.

Please write back send comments!

Lots of love,
Yvette, Erik and Noakai

I'm not sure where their delivery area is. I know another couple who use them and like them.

Baby Carrier
A friend of mine sent us this baby carrier, I found it to be wonderful because it is so comfortable! Since Noakai got bigger and heavier, I can only carry him comfortably in the sling for about 20 -30 minutes before he starts getting too heavy, although he loves being in it.
(I hear that Sam & Sebs on Bedford has slings and will show you how to use them)

Here is their website, it's a Canadian company so you can order online or through their toll free number. If you do, let them know that Heidi Kon referred you, she's my friend from Honolulu who sent us our Baby Trekker.
